India has officially rolled out e-passports equipped with embedded electronic chips to modernize travel documentation. These passports securely store biometric data, reduce risks of fraud, and speed up immigration checks. Citizens can apply through the Passport Seva Programme, with fees aligned to existing passport charges, marking a major leap in global travel compliance.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has introduced e-passports under the Passport Seva Programme, aligning with international standards for secure travel. Unlike traditional passports, e-passports contain a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip embedded in the back cover, storing personal and biometric details such as fingerprints, facial recognition data, and digital signatures. This technology enhances identity verification, prevents tampering, and ensures faster clearance at airports.
Who can apply
All Indian citizens eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-passport. This includes applicants seeking new passports as well as those renewing existing ones.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the Passport Seva portal. Applicants need to register, fill in the e-passport application form, upload required documents, and schedule an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Biometric data will be captured during the appointment.
Application fee
The fee for an e-passport is the same as a traditional passport. For a 36-page passport, the fee is Rs 1,500, while a 60-page passport costs Rs 2,000. Tatkal applications carry higher charges.
