In a heartwarming call to inclusion and accessibility, the Elite Games Federation, one of India's top sports NGOs, has formally petitioned the government of Maharashtra to declare Aamir Khan's latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, tax-free in the state. The movie, released on June 20, 2025, was widely praised for its emotional depth and socially responsible content.
1. Why the Appeal?
-
The NGO pointed out that the film is not entertainment per se—it's a empowering portrayal of the struggles and dreams of neurodivergent kids.
-
In a written letter to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Federation observed that the film is consistent with their charter to promote inclusion in sport and society, especially for para-athletes.
-
Making the film tax-free will enable it to reach more families, schools, and communities—sharing a crucial message of empathy, accessibility, and acceptance," the NGO stated.
2. About the Film
-
Co-directed by R.S. Prasanna and produced jointly by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, Sitaare Zameen Par is a comedy-drama sports movie in which a disgraced basketball coach (played by Aamir Khan) gets assigned duty to train a team of neurodivergent children as part of his community service.
-
Starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film has 10 debuting actors, with Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala forming a sturdy supporting cast.
-
It is seen as the spiritual sequel to 2007 blockbuster Taare Zameen Par and is reported to be a remake of the Spanish movie Champions.
3. Public Reaction & Cultural Significance
-
The film has received acclaim from critics as one of the best films in recent memory, as well as from audiences, for its motivational story and universal theme.

The plea of the NGO has gone viral on social media with teachers, disability activists, and fans seconding the tax exemption plea.
