From Dust to Dazzle: New Town Gets a Mega Makeover Worth Crores

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dedicated five mega development projects worth ₹455.5 crore on July 17, of which four were in New Town, Kolkata. The projects include public facilities, infrastructure, and housing, which serve the state cause towards inclusive urban development and sustainable planning.

Key points of the ceremony

- Two Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Lower Income Groups (LIG) housing colonies were opened on 7 acres of land with 1,930 flats
- EWS complex, Nijanna, is G+14 with 1,210 units; the LIG complex, Sujanna, is G+15 with 720 units
- Flats will be distributed by lottery, with land provided free by way of grant from the state and rates subsidized below market levels.

Public facilities and infrastructure

1. A multi-level parking complex called Susampanna was also opened along with the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, constructed on 2 acres that will park more than 1,500 cars for ₹141 crore
2. A two-story cafeteria and outside stage called Taranna was constructed near the eco-urban village, and it has a 200-seat theater, walking trails, and family recreation areas
3. All the projects utilized state land bank land, avoiding compulsory acquisition and preserving green belts intact
