The city football community gathered together in a poignant session to honor the immortal legacies of D M K Afzal and Syed Mahmood Ali—two giants whose contribution defined the city's glorious football history.
Key Highlights
Tribute to Legends: The tribute meet was attended by dignitaries like former India captain Victor Amalraj and Telangana Football Association Secretary G Palguna, who paid tributes to the deceased DMK Afzal and Syed Mahmood Ali.
Afzal's Golden Legacy: Afzal, who died in May 2025, was best remembered for having been a member of India's historic 1962 Asian Games gold medal victory. He was also a member of the combined Andhra Pradesh team that had won the Santosh Trophy, Durand Cup, and Rovers Cup.
Guided by the Best: Afzal and Mahmood were both products of the great mentor S A Rahim's tutelage, which ranks as Indian football's golden era. Rahim's influence was even felt in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, when five Hyderabad players represented India.
Mahmood's Club Glory: Syed Mahmood Ali was recalled for his captaincy with the iconic Mohammedan Sporting Club, Kolkata, and his invaluable contribution to state football.
Community Attendance: Football legends, club members, and local leaders like Mohammed Muzzafar Ali (Shalibanda Corporator), Habib Khan, GP Vijay Kumar, Chandu, and Venkatesh Reddy attended the event. Laiquddin Khan, Vice President, CCOB Football Club, organized the event.
Inspiring the Youth: Afzal and Mahmood's sportsmanship and passion were noted as inspiring young Hyderabad footballers even today. Amalraj defined Afzal as a "true gentleman player" who inspired young players with passion.
We were lucky to have grown up seeing someone like him," said Victor Amalraj, echoing the sentiment of a generation of Hyderabad footballers.
The legacy of D M K Afzal and Syed Mahmood Ali continues as a source of inspiration to generations to come of footballers, their memory staying in the heart of Indian football.
