In a world space exploration first, India, Poland, and Hungary became the first countries in over 40 years to join human spaceflight by launching astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) for the first time in their history. Axiom Space's Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) with SpaceX and NASA launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 12:01 PM IST on June 25, 2025, aboard a new SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket.

Key Points :
Historic Crew:
  • Shubhanshu Shukla (India, ISRO pilot), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland, ESA project astronaut), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary, HUNOR program) will be joined by veteran commander Peggy Whitson (USA, Axiom Space).
  • Each of the three countries has its first government-funded human spaceflight since the Soviet 1980s and its first ISS mission.
Mission Objectives:
  • The 14-day mission will involve the crew performing close to 60 science experiments ranging from microalgae, seed germination, human physiology, and survival of tardigrades in space.
  • Seven India-led experiments will seek to advance microgravity research and technology for long-duration missions in the future.
Symbolic Moments:
  • Shukla is India's first space traveler since Rakesh Sharma in 1984, with the hopes of 1.4 billion Indians resting on his shoulders and a live telephonic conversation lined up with Prime Minister Modi.
  • Each of the astronauts carried cultural foods: Indian curry and mango nectar, Hungarian paprika paste, and Polish pierogies.
  • Hungary's first cosmonaut, Bertalan Farkas, launched a symbolic teddy bear as a good luck token.
International Cooperation:
  • The mission is the outcome of integrating India-US space relations and includes scientific portfolios led by the U.S., India, Poland (in collaboration with ESA), and Hungary.
  • It was sponsored by all the countries, and each seat was more than $65 million.
Launch Challenges:
The mission was postponed due to weather, a Falcon 9 fuel leak, and a Russian ISS module issue, which was addressed by NASA-Roscosmos cooperation.

Looking Ahead:
For India, Ax-4 is a crucial stepping stone towards its own indigenous manned Gaganyaan mission in 2027.

This mission is not only a triumphant return of these nations to human spaceflight but also demonstrates the growing significance of commercial alliances and international cooperation in the new space age.
