Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar recently disclosed that he bought his legendary 4,000 sq ft bungalow on Bandra Bandstand, Mumbai, for a mere Rs 5 lakh in the 1970s-a figure earned from his prolific writing days. The real estate scenario in Mumbai was quite different then, with land rates much lower and bungalows not yet fashionable. Akhtar also joked that he might as well be the first person to have bought a bungalow "on words alone," citing how his writing for such classics as Sholay and Deewaar catapulted him to the top. He contrasted his journey with peers like Gulzar, who had also splurged on property thanks to a thriving career and the urging of star wife Rakhee. Akhtar's account is a paean to both his cinematic legacy and the property possibilities of the time.
