India’s fuel consumption saw a notable uptick in May, with petrol sales rising 9.2% year-on-year and diesel demand increasing 2.2% YoY, according to government data. The total fuel sales for the month stood at 21.32 million metric tons, marking a 1.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
The surge in petrol sales is attributed to heightened summer travel and increased urban mobility, while diesel demand remained steady, supported by agricultural and industrial activity. Analysts suggest that the rise in fuel consumption reflects a broader economic recovery and sustained demand across sectors.
Additionally, jet fuel consumption grew 4.3%, driven by increased air travel, and LPG sales saw a 13.4% rise, boosted by government initiatives like Ujjwala connections. The overall fuel consumption trend indicates a strong post-pandemic rebound, with industry experts predicting continued growth in the coming months.
