In a performance for the ages, Shubman Gill etched his name into cricketing history by becoming only the second Indian—after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar—to score a double century and a century in the same Test match. The feat came during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, where Gill led from the front as India’s Test captain.

1. The Record-Breaking Innings
  • First Innings: Gill scored a monumental 269 runs, showcasing patience, precision, and flair.
  • Second Innings: He followed it up with a commanding 161, becoming the ninth player in Test history to achieve this rare double.
Gill also became the first player in Test history to score 200+ and 150+ in the same match, setting a new global benchmark.

2. Elite Company
  • Gill joins an exclusive club that includes:
  • Sunil Gavaskar (124 & 220 vs West Indies, 1971)
  • Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Graham Gooch, and Marnus Labuschagne, among others.

3. Captaincy Milestones
  • At 25 years and 298 days, Gill is now the second-youngest Indian captain to score a Test double hundred, behind M.A.K. Pataudi.
  • He also holds the record for the highest individual Test score by an Indian in England, surpassing Gavaskar (221*) and Dravid (217).
4. Match Impact
  • India declared their second innings at 427/6, setting England a daunting target of 609 runs.
  • Gill’s leadership and batting masterclass have put India in a commanding position to win the Test and take a series lead.
