Project Vishnu: India's Strategic Game-Changer

India is developing a next-generation hypersonic missile named Vishnu, short for Vehicle for Integrated and Strategic Hypersonic Navigation and Utility

As a multi-role hypersonic gliding vehicle, Vishnu will have the ability to fly at speeds of Mach 10 (about 12,000 km/h) and will be nuclear-tipped.

It will provide launch flexibility from land, sea, and air bases, increasing India's strategic reach

The missile is radar evasive and can penetrate advanced air defense systems.

Technical Superiority and Tactical Advantage

Vishnu's range is expected to be 5,000 km, with precision strike and mid-air agility

DRDO has achieved success by testing its scramjet propulsion system, which is capable of withstanding high temperatures of 2,000°C

The missile's stealth cloak and its flight at low levels make it almost impossible to intercept

Once functional, Vishnu will position India among hypersonic nations such as China and Russia

Global Benchmark: Russia's Avangard

Russia currently leads the hypersonic race with its Avangard missile, a glide vehicle launched via ICBM

Avangard flies at Mach 20–27 (33,000 km/h), is equipped with a 2-megaton nuclear warhead, and has a 10,000 km range

Its ability to change direction in mid-air renders it nearly immune to existing missile defense systems

Strategic Implications

Vishnu's emergence signals India's plans to rechart its defense strategy and make it to the elite club of hypersonic nations

It will deter neighbors more and enhance India's military status internationally
