India's long-awaited bullet train project is progressing at a rapid rate, with the first high-speed trains likely to be up and running in Gujarat by 2028 and full operation between Ahmedabad and Mumbai likely to commence by 2030. Official reports and internal NHSRCL memoranda say that the initial section between Sabarmati and Vapi in Gujarat is progressing at a rapid rate and work on Maharashtra, including key Bandra Kurla Complex station in Mumbai, is catching up on previously delayed schemes.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor spanning 508 kilometers will have 12 stations and will run at a speed of up to 320 kmph. Trial operations on a 50-kilometer track between Surat and Bilimora will begin in 2026, and the first bullet train station in Surat is nearing completion for such trials. Over 300 kilometers of viaducts and major foundation work have already been completed, it being a significant milestone for Indian infrastructure.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other authorities have labeled the project a revolutionary step for India's transport infrastructure, which will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from six hours to three. With India all set to enter the global club of high-speed rail nations, expectations are running high for the first bullet train ride of India—beginning in Gujarat and hurtling towards the sky of Mumbai by 2030.
