An unusual February heatwave has hit Mumbai with temperatures reaching 37-38°C, almost 5 degrees above the usual level. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued a yellow warning for Mumbai and the surrounding areas. Officials are concerned that the heatwave may speed up water evaporation from the lakes and result in a decrease in water stockpiles. Presently, Mumbai's seven lakes have 51.12% of their total water holding capacity. Although no imminent water cuts have been planned, authorities are keeping a close watch. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) could be forced to implement water cuts in April if the current inventory is not enough until the onset of the monsoon.
