Heavy Rains Expected in Nilgiris, Coimbatore Ghats, and Southern Tamil Nadu Districts
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted heavy rainfall over the Nilgiris, Coimbatore Ghats, and southern districts of Tamil Nadu such as Theni, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, and Tirunelveli. The wet spell, which has lasted for more than a week, is due to the orographic effect, which increases precipitation in hilly areas.
Key Points
1. Rainfall Trends and Forecast
The southwest monsoon has picked up, with heavy showers lashing the Nilgiris and Coimbatore Ghats.
Chinnakalar in Coimbatore district received 13 cm of rain over the last 24 hours, followed by Nalumukku and Oothu in Tirunelveli with 12 cm each.
Moderate showers lashed Chennai as well, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam receiving 25 mm and 19.5 mm of rain, respectively.
2. Monsoon Break Expected from June 1
Meteorologists forecast a short break in monsoon activity from June 1 for about 10 days.
The change is because the weather system over the Bay of Bengal has weakened, diminishing the intensity of rainfall over Tamil Nadu.
Experts instruct people to get ready for the second active phase, which is likely to begin mid-June.
3. Effect on Agriculture and Water Bodies
The recent rains filled up reservoirs and improved agricultural prospects, which are positive for farmers in rain-fed areas.
Police have issued an alert against landslides and waterlogging hazards in the hill regions, warning people to exercise caution.
4. Future Expectations and Precautions
The Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority (TNDMA) has advised people staying in flood-prone areas.
Tourists are requested to seek weather updates before going to hill stations and forested areas.
