Flash floods in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday night were brought on by heavy rain, damaging 20 to 25 cars parked along Jagat Khana in Nirmand. The gushing waters swept some of the cars along the river and left debris scattered across the location, though officials confirmed there were no casualties or loss of homes. The Satluj River saw a sudden rise in water levels, and dramatic videos of the cars being swept away are making the rounds on social media.
Though some residents held a cloudburst responsible for the incident, officials said it was due to heavy rain. The Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5) was also sealed with debris between Rampur and Kinnaur, further disrupting travel. The local met center has predicted a 'yellow' alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (40–50 km/h) in all 12 districts on both May 27 and 28, with special warnings for Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Chamba on May 25 and 26.
The citizens are advised to avoid parking near vulnerable water channels and remain vigilant with the pre-monsoon rains still posing an increased threat of inclement weather in the region.
