At a historic auction at Christie's New York on March 19, 2025, MF Husain's colossal painting 'Untitled (Gram Yatra)' fetched an unbelievable $13.8 million (Rs 118 crore), a new benchmark for modern Indian art. The 1954 artwork, 14 feet in size and containing 13 vignettes of Indian village life, more than doubled the existing record by Amrita Sher-Gil's 'The Story Teller'. Art collector Kiran Nadar was said to have bought the painting, which for 70 years had been shown very little. The sale represents a milestone moment in the Indian art market that reflects increasing world appreciation for India's modernist artists. Medical training at Oslo University Hospital is to benefit from the auction money.
