The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution in the QS World University Rankings 2026, climbing to the 123rd global position, its highest-ever placement. This marks a dramatic leap of 27 spots from last year and over 70 places in just two years, reflecting the institute’s growing global stature.
 
Key Highlights:
  • - IIT Delhi ranks 123rd globally, tied with Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.
  • - It outpaced IIT Bombay (129th) and IIT Madras (180th), becoming India’s highest-ranked university.
  • - The institute excelled in Employer Reputation (50th globally), Citations per Faculty (86th), Academic Reputation (142nd), and Sustainability (172nd).
  • - India now has 54 institutions in the QS rankings—its highest ever—making it the fourth most represented country after the US, UK, and China.
  • - Eight new Indian universities debuted in the rankings this year, the most by any country.
The QS report credits IIT Delhi’s rise to improved research output, global collaborations, and enhanced data transparency. Meanwhile, IIT Madras made a notable jump of 47 ranks to enter the top 200 for the first time.
