In a gesture that has moved hearts throughout India, 93-year-old Nivrutti Shinde walked into a jewellery shop in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with a simple wish: to buy a mangalsutra for his wife, Shantabai, as a token of eternal love.

Attired in a simple white dhoti-kurta and cap, the two—on a temple tour to Pandharpur to celebrate the Ashadhi Ekadashi festival—entered Gopika Jewellers with ₹1,120 in cash. Initially believed to be charity collectors, employees were moved to tears when Shinde softly explained his desire to purchase the holy necklace for his longtime girlfriend.

Emotionally touched by the act, the shop owner refused to take a full payment and instead accepted a nominal ₹20 as a token blessing, giving the mangalsutra to the couple. The warm exchange was caught on camera and has turned into an internet sensation ever since, with a social media view of over 20 million.

The Shindes, a pair from Jalna district's Ambhora Jahagir village, have been renowned for their life-long relationship and self-sufficiency, even till the twilight of their years. Their story has become an iconic representation of timeless love, humility, and the quiet power of goodness.
