India’s energy roadmap is undergoing a major shift, with nuclear power emerging as a central pillar in the country’s long-term strategy for clean and reliable electricity. In response to a Parliament query, the government outlined plans to scale nuclear capacity from 8.7 GW to 100 GW by 2047, backed by legislative reforms and private sector participation.

Key Highlights from the Roadmap

- 24 reactors currently generate 8,780 MW; 8 more under construction will add 6,600 MW

- 10 sanctioned reactors in pre-project stages expected to contribute another 7,000 MW

- Target of 22,480 MW by 2031–32 through a mix of PHWRs, FBRs, and LWRs

- ₹20,000 crore allocated for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development under the Nuclear Energy Mission

Policy and Legislative Shifts

- Amendments proposed to the Atomic Energy Act and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act to enable private investment

- Government aims to address liability concerns and reassure foreign
suppliers

- Private players may be allowed to build and operate SMRs, especially in remote or retired thermal plant sites

Strategic Goals and Global Context

- Nuclear energy seen as key to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070

- India aligns with COP28’s global call to triple nuclear capacity

- SMRs expected to support decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors and boost exports of Indian nuclear technology

Looking Ahead

The roadmap reflects a shift from secrecy to openness, with the government betting on innovation, safety, and global partnerships to meet its energy and climate goals.
