India is preparing for one of its largest defence acquisitions as the Defence Ministry gears up to review the ₹3.25 lakh crore Rafale proposal next week. The plan involves procuring 114 advanced Rafale combat aircraft, with initial clearance already granted by the Defence Procurement Board.
The timing is significant, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming visit to New Delhi. The deal is seen as critical to addressing the Indian Air Force’s squadron shortfall, currently at 30 squadrons against the sanctioned strength of 42.
If approved, the acquisition will not only enhance India’s air combat capabilities but also strengthen defence cooperation with France. A large portion of the jets is expected to be manufactured in India, boosting local industry and self-reliance.
