India Post has launched DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number), a geo-coded, grid-based digital address system, designed to enhance location accuracy and service delivery across India. Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), DIGIPIN aims to modernize postal services, logistics, and emergency response.

Unlike traditional six-digit PIN codes, DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to a precise 4m x 4m grid, ensuring pinpoint accuracy. The system is part of the DHRUVA initiative (Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address) and aligns with India’s National Geospatial Policy 2022.

India Post has launched the “Know Your DIGIPIN” portal, allowing users to generate and retrieve their DIGIPIN using latitude and longitude coordinates. The system is open-source, enabling integration into e-commerce, navigation, and public services.

Key Highlights:

  • DIGIPIN provides precise 10-character digital addresses, replacing vague PIN codes.
  • Developed with IIT Hyderabad & ISRO, enhancing logistics & emergency response.
  • “Know Your DIGIPIN” portal launched for easy access & integration.
  • Supports India’s National Geospatial Policy 2022 & digital governance.
