India is once again at the forefront of global technological dialogue as it hosts the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from September 15 to 19, 2025. Held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the event brings together more than 2,000 experts from over 100 countries to shape the future of electrotechnical standards. This marks the fourth time India has hosted the prestigious gathering, following previous editions in 1960, 1997, and 2013.
Organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the meeting is a milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in sustainable, electric, and connected technologies.
Key Highlights of the IEC 2025 General Meeting
The event will feature over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings focused on next-generation standards.
India will serve as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a key area for clean energy solutions.
The IEC GM Exhibition, inaugurated by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, will showcase innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will open the General Meeting, representing the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.
India’s Role in Global Standardisation
Leadership in LVDC
India’s appointment as the Global Secretariat for LVDC standardisation highlights its commitment to clean and pollution-free energy.
LVDC is critical for applications in solar power, electric vehicles, and smart grids, making India’s leadership pivotal for global clean tech development.
BIS Initiatives
BIS has developed over 24,000 standards, with nearly 7,000 aligned with international norms such as ISO and IEC.
The organisation is actively integrating standardisation into academia through student chapters and a six-month internship programme.
More than 2,000 students from schools and colleges are expected to visit the exhibition, promoting awareness and engagement.
Young Professionals Programme
Under the IEC Young Professionals Programme, 93 emerging leaders from around the world will participate in workshops, boot camps, and industry visits.
This initiative aims to prepare the next generation of experts in electrotechnical standardisation.
Workshops and Thematic Sessions

September 16: Artificial Intelligence – Shaping the Future with Innovation
September 17: Shaping the Future of E-Mobility
September 18: Building a More Inclusive World through Standards
These sessions will explore how international standards can drive innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability across industries.
Exhibition and Public Engagement
The IEC GM Exhibition will feature 75 exhibitors, including leading industries, associations, and startups.
It will be open to the public from September 16 to 19, between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, with free entry through prior registration.
