India is shaping its AI regulatory landscape with a balanced, innovation-friendly approach. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the government is in active consultation with various ministries and policy think tanks to develop a framework that encourages responsible AI deployment without stifling growth.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently released the India AI Governance Guidelines under the IndiaAI Mission. The framework outlines seven guiding principles—called “sutras”—and a tiered action plan focused on risk-based oversight. The government emphasized that there is no immediate plan for standalone AI legislation, opting instead for a flexible, principle-led model.
