India’s Call for Calm: Modi Reaches Out Amid Israel-Iran Crisis

Updated: June 14, 2025 09:39

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, just hours after Israel launched major airstrikes against Iranian military and nuclear sites. During the call, Netanyahu briefed Modi on the unfolding crisis, including the details of Operation Rising Lion, which targeted key Iranian facilities and reportedly resulted in the deaths of senior Iranian commanders.

Modi expressed India’s deep concern over the escalating conflict and stressed the urgent need for peace and stability in the region. He emphasized that both sides should avoid further escalation and return to dialogue and diplomacy. Modi’s message was clear: India supports the early restoration of calm and is ready to offer any possible support to de-escalate tensions.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs echoed these sentiments, urging both Iran and Israel to use existing diplomatic channels to resolve their differences. The government also issued travel advisories for Indian citizens in both countries, advising vigilance and caution as the situation develops.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also received a call from Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to discuss the ongoing developments. Indian embassies in Tehran and Tel Aviv are closely monitoring the safety of Indian nationals and have ramped up communication with the diaspora.

This high-level outreach highlights India’s balanced approach and longstanding ties with both Israel and Iran. As the world watches the fallout from the strikes, India has positioned itself as a voice for restraint and dialogue in an increasingly tense region.
