Red alert was sounded in coastal Karnataka as heavy rainfall lashed Mangaluru on Saturday, throwing the city into chaos and inundating several low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that the red alert will continue until the morning of June 16, with even heavier showers predicted over the weekend.
Key Highlights:
• Roads in Car Street, Lower Bendur, Kottara, and beneath the Pumpwell flyover were inundated, badly affecting traffic and routine life.
• A bus broke down in one of the flooded areas and was pushed to safety by residents and passengers with the assistance of locals.
• Flooding of the Padil railway underpass and other vulnerable residential areas caused water to enter houses, contributing to the sufferings of residents. In spite of previous red alerts earlier during the week with little rain, Saturday's rain was especially intense, and overcast skies point to the possibility of more heavy rain.
Prospects: Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly along flood-prone areas, since the IMD has predicted more rain for the area. The disaster response is on high alert, and residents have been asked to steer clear of waterlogged areas until the situation gets better.
