Jharkhand is at the threshold of the much-awaited respite with the southwest monsoon expected to make its presence felt between June 17 and 19, with widespread rains in the state. India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a series of alerts, ending the prolonged heatwave and an abrupt shift in the weather pattern.

Key Highlights

Monsoon Arrival Window: Southwest monsoon will hit Jharkhand between June 17 and 19, bringing relief from hot summer temperatures.

Warnings Issued:

A 'yellow' warning of heavy rain has been forecast for Monday in central and southwest Jharkhand.

An 'orange' warning, a warning of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, has been given for June 17 and 18 for these places.

Pre-Monsoon Activity: Light to moderate thundershowers and showers are expected to begin on Sunday, with increased intensity expected from Monday with cyclonic circulation.

Rain Deficit: Jharkhand has witnessed a 58% rain deficit from June 1 to June 14 with only 20.8 mm compared to the normal 49.1 mm for the duration.

Monsoon Forecast for Farmers: The IMD is expecting total normal rains during the four-month monsoon season, which comes as relief for farmers preparing their fields for paddy transplantation.

Duration: The monsoon will probably last until September, with frequent rain for agricultural purposes.

Historical Context: Monsoon typically arrives in Jharkhand between June 12 and June 25. It had arrived here a year ago on June 21. Droughts had been notified in nearly all districts in the last two years as rains in June and July were scanty.

Weather authorities advise individuals to be vigilant for possible thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, especially from the central and southwestern parts of the country. The forecast rain is expected to replenish water reservoirs and improve farming opportunities after two successive years of drought.

"Chances are bright for the monsoon to start between June 17 and June 19. There will be widespread rain in the state from June 17 to June 20, and scattered areas will see heavy to very heavy rain," said Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director, Ranchi Meteorological Centre.
