Mumbai's east-west corridor lifeline Metro Line 1 (Versova-Andheri- Ghatkopar) is going to be upgraded on a greater scale. From June 16, 2025, all the trains will travel the entire distance of Ghatkopar to Versova with increased frequency, ending the short-loop shuttle run and providing a smoother and faster journey to lakhs of daily commuters.
Key Highlights:
-
Full Route Operations Resume: All Metro Line 1 trains will now operate the entire 11.4-km route from Versova to Ghatkopar, eliminating the Andheri-Ghatkopar shuttle operated for crowd control in March 2025.
-
Increased Speed: The frequency gap between trains will be reduced from 205 seconds to just 200 seconds during peak times so that there are more trains in a shorter time and quicker crowd evacuation at major stations.
-
Improved Passenger Experience: With around 5-6 lakh passengers commuting daily and maximum usage of around 85% between Andheri and Ghatkopar, this project will likely reduce congestion, lower waiting times, and enhance punctuality.
-
Response to Commuter Demand: The announcement follows months of protests lodged by commuters frustrated with overcrowding and waiting times, especially at Ghatkopar, Andheri, and Marol stations.
-
Operational Excellence: More than 111 crore passenger journeys have been witnessed by Metro Line 1 in 11 years, with 99.99% punctuality and 99.96% availability.
-
Environmental Advantage: The line prevents more than 67,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, the same as planting more than 3 million trees.
-
No Upgrade to Coach Planned: Despite calls for more trains to further decongest the line, the operator has no plans at present to add more coaches, citing moderate ridership levels.
What Commuters Can Expect
Faster, smoother service: More trains an hour mean less wait and fewer people during rush hour.
Seamless Connectivity: The operation along the entire route provides direct access to all 12 stations, convenient for office personnel, students, and daily commuters.
Ever-Growing Demand for Expansion: Even as frequency is on the rise, most commuters still desire longer trains to accommodate the increasing transit demands of the city.
"From 16th June 2025, enjoy higher frequency during peak hours for a more convenient and faster ride. All trains will run the entire length from Ghatkopar to Versova." — Mumbai Metro One official release.
