The Indian government has inaugurated the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai, a milestone project to establish India as a creative technology and digital content powerhouse on a global scale. Declared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the occasion of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, IICT is patterned after the IITs and IIMs and will be a National Centre of Excellence for the AVGC-XR industry (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality).
Major Highlights:
IICT will be a world-class talent nurturing centre for animation, gaming, visual effects, comics, and digital arts with emphasis on innovation, R&D, and international industry benchmarks.
Seven international technology majors-NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Star India, Meta, and Adobe-have joined hands with IICT, signing Letters of Intent to promote collaboration in curriculum design, technology exposure, and research.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned ₹400 crore for the establishment of IICT. The Maharashtra government has given ten acres of land at Mumbai Film City for its permanent campus, and the first phase is already functional at the NFDC Building, Pedder Road, Mumbai.
The institute has state-of-the-art infrastructure: gaming and animation labs, virtual production facilities, immersive studios, preview theatres, and smart classrooms.
IICT's launch seeks to mirror India's IT success in the creative economy, creating a sustainable ecosystem for emerging creators, technologists, and entrepreneurs, and making Mumbai a global creative hub.
Upcoming plans are for regional centers in India to decentralize access and incubate local creative ecosystems, bringing nationwide reach.
With the support of robust government encouragement and industry alliances, IICT is poised to revolutionize India's creative economy and empower digital leaders of tomorrow.
