India generates over 1.7 million tonnes of e-waste annually, but less than half is formally processed. A new smart tech platform, Green Grid, offers a scalable solution by integrating AI, IoT, and blockchain to streamline e-waste collection, classification, and recycling, while engaging citizens in sustainable practices.
A Digital Fix For A Toxic Problem
India ranks third globally in e-waste generation, yet more than 80% of its electronic waste is handled informally, often through unsafe methods that release toxic chemicals into the environment. Despite existing regulations, only about one-third of e-waste is processed through formal channels, according to recent reports from ETEnergyWorld and India Today.
The Green Grid platform, developed by researchers and sustainability technologists, aims to change that. It combines smart recycling bins equipped with sensors, AI-based device classification, blockchain-led traceability, and gamified citizen engagement to create a transparent and efficient e-waste management system. The platform’s pilot rollout in urban clusters has shown promising results in improving collection rates and reducing environmental hazards.
