India’s Film Industry Roars Back: ₹5,728 Cr Earned in First Half of 2025

Indian movies have recorded a record-breaking box office haul in the first half of 2025, collecting ₹5,728 crore from January to June—a 14% rise from the same period a year ago. The film industry is on path for a record year with 17 films reaching the ₹100 crore threshold.
 
Highest-grossing titles:
 
- Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava takes the lead with ₹693 crore.
 
- Telugu blockbuster Sankranti Ki Vaastunam makes ₹222 crore.
 
- Sitare Zameen Par and Housefull 5 earned around ₹200 crore.
 
- Malayalam films Thudarum and Empuraan were also part of the top 10, earning ₹144 crore and ₹126 crore respectively.
 
Industry trends:
 
- Hindi cinema continues to dominate with a market share of 39%, followed by Telugu (19%), Tamil (17%), and Malayalam (10%).
 
- Hollywood returned, taking 10% of total collections—the highest since 2022.
 
- June added ₹920 crore by itself, led by a mix of local and overseas releases.
 
Prediction for the rest of 2025:
 
- If current momentum holds, total box office earnings could hit ₹18,500 crore by year-end.
 
- Future releases like Kantara: Chapter 1, War 2, Coolie, and OG will propel further growth.
