Ram Madhav, a senior BJP leader and author, is urging India to take a fresh look at its ambitions on the world stage. Instead of chasing the lofty goal of being a “Vishwa Guru” (teacher to the world), he thinks the country should focus on more practical and immediate priorities.

Here’s what he’s saying:

Time to Rethink: Madhav believes India shouldn’t get too caught up in the idea of being a global teacher. He suggests it’s more important to work on economic growth, technology, and building leadership in the region.

Growth Isn’t Enough: Even with 8% annual growth, Madhav says India won’t reach its full potential. He argues that the country needs to aim for double-digit growth over the next twenty years, and that means putting more effort into research, development, and innovation.

Focus on the Neighborhood: Instead of looking only to the US and Europe, Madhav wants India to pay more attention to its own region—especially the East and the Indian Ocean area. He points out that working closely with ASEAN countries could help balance China’s influence.

Questioning Global Bodies: Madhav is skeptical about how much global institutions like the UN Security Council can really do for India. He thinks India’s interests would be better served by building strong regional partnerships, especially with other countries in the Global South.

Defining ‘Brand Bharat’: He says India should figure out what unique values it brings to the world—like democracy, family, and caring for the environment—instead of just copying Western models.

A Practical Approach: Madhav’s main message is that India needs a clear-eyed, practical strategy that tackles its own challenges and makes the most of its strengths in a fast-changing world.
