India's sugar sector is poised to make a strong recovery with production anticipated to cross 29.5 million tonnes in the 2025-26 season due to better planting of cane and favorable weather conditions, ISMA said. ISMA anticipates two consecutive years of surplus production, which will provide sufficient supply to meet domestic consumption and ethanol production.
Key Highlights:
Projected sugar production of 29.5 MT in 2025-26, ending five-year low.
Improved cane cultivation in Karnataka and Maharashtra improves production possibilities.
Above average monsoon anticipated, favoring increased yields.
Government allows 1 MT of sugar export during 2024-25 with scope for further export next season.
Ethanol diversion continues to be an important source of offsetting domestic supply.
With favorable monsoon predictions and increased cane plantations, India is likely to resume sugar export, which may have a bearing on world sugar prices.
