India’s UPI Surpasses Visa, Powers Half Of Global Digital Payments In June

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has cemented its position as the world’s leading real-time digital payment system, clocking 18.39 billion transactions worth ₹24.03 lakh crore in June 2025. According to the International Monetary Fund, UPI now accounts for 85 percent of India’s digital payments and nearly 50 percent of global real-time transactions.

- UPI processed over 640 million transactions daily in June, overtaking Visa’s global volume.
- The system connects 675 banks and serves 491 million users and 65 million merchants on a unified platform.
- Transaction volume grew 32 percent year-on-year, up from 13.88 billion in June 2024.
