The government of Karnataka has made a significant leap towards green mobility for cities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with European companies for electric rapid transit (e-RT) pilot deployment in Hubballi-Dharwad. The project will bring a contemporary, green metro-style transport system into the twin cities, and then to other tier-two cities if the venture proves successful.
MoU Signing:
-
The MoU was signed by Karnataka government with European companies Hess AG, Hess India, and SSB AG.
-
The MoU was signed at the Chief Minister's residence in Bengaluru, headed by CM Siddaramaiah.
Project Details:
-
The e-RT system will have a 20-kilometer route between Hubballi and Dharwad.
-
It will run on elevated roads and at-grade locations, with each bus having a capacity of up to 250 passengers for a single trip.
-
Drawing inspiration from successful European implementations, this fully electric system has been designed to be environmentally friendly and efficient.
Preparation and Feasibility:
-
one-year feasibility study has been undertaken to evaluate the viability of the project.
-
The Chief Minister instructed officials to draw up a Detailed Project Report (DPR) within three months for execution.
Future Prospects:
Should the pilot project be successful, the government aims to roll out the e-RT system to other tier-two cities in Karnataka.
Leadership and Collaboration:
Labour Minister Santosh Lad went to Switzerland to learn about similar projects and submitted the findings of feasibility to CM Siddaramaiah.
The signing ceremony of the MoU was graced by major officials, such as Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Social Welfare Minister C. Mahadevappa, and officials from Hess AG and SSB AG.
