Kolkata is set to make a significant jump towards its green energy backbone as Bengal Gas Company Ltd (BGCL) comes forward with a proposal to supply piped natural gas to 25,000 homes by the end of 2025. This ambitious project will not only provide cleaner cooking fuel to thousands of households but is also a major step towards cleaning up the carbon footprint of the city.
Parallel to this, Kolkata's CNG fuelling stations network is poised for a strong growth. By the end of the year, there will be 30 CNG stations within greater Kolkata from 18 currently, increasing access for private cars as well as public transport. Two new CNG stations have been opened recently by state industries minister Shashi Panja and plans announced for many more, especially to cater to the expanding city fleet of CNG-run buses.

BGCL, a partnership of GAIL (India) Ltd and the state government, is spearheading this change, with a mission to be able to supply five lakh domestic consumers and have about 90 CNG stations in West Bengal in the next five years. The energy dynamics of the city are poised for a greener, cleaner future.
