India has officially entered the global semiconductor race with the launch of its first indigenous chip, marking a historic milestone in the country’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the MadeinIndia semiconductor, built on 28nm and 90nm nodes, will begin production this year, setting the stage for domestic chip manufacturing.
Key Highlights:
Strategic Leap: India’s first homegrown chip is designed for automobiles, telecom, power systems, and railway technologies, catering to 60% of global semiconductor demand.
Fabrication Expansion: Six semiconductor fabrication units are under construction, reinforcing India’s longterm commitment to chip production.
Global Positioning: While Taiwan and the U.S. push for 2nm and 3nm chips, India’s 28nm and 90nm nodes remain critical for industrial applications.
Government Backing: The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in 2021, has accelerated investments, attracting global players like Micron and Foxconn.
Future Roadmap: India aims to scale up chip production, ensuring selfreliance in semiconductor technology while reducing dependence on foreign imports.
This landmark achievement positions India as a rising force in semiconductor manufacturing, paving the way for technological independence.
