The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced plans to set up the state’s largest vehicle scrapping facility on a sprawling 100-acre site near Khuldabad in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district. This landmark initiative is expected to revolutionize vehicle disposal in Maharashtra, boost MSRTC’s revenue, and set new benchmarks in environmental compliance and operational scale.
Key Highlights:
The facility will be developed on 100 acres of MSRTC-owned land, making it nearly 20 times larger than any existing vehicle scrapping center in the state.
The project will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with private bidders selected based on the revenue share they offer to MSRTC.
Designed to comply with Automotive Industry Standards (AIS), the center will dismantle and scientifically dispose of end-of-life vehicles, ensuring that scrapped components are not reused.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) policy, which mandates the environmentally responsible scrapping of vehicles older than 15 years.
Maharashtra adopted the RVSF policy in 2023, and currently, eight authorized private entities operate scrapping centers in the state, each with a minimum capacity of 1,000 vehicles per year.
The new facility is expected to significantly increase the state’s capacity for eco-friendly vehicle disposal, provide a sustainable revenue stream for the debt-ridden MSRTC, and create new employment opportunities in the region.
Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik emphasized that the project will set new standards in efficiency, safety, and environmental protection for vehicle scrapping operations in India.
