Maharashtra To Launch India’s First Pod Taxi Network Connecting Thane, Navi Mumbai And Mira-Bhayandar

Maharashtra is set to make history by introducing India’s first-ever pod taxi system, linking Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. The project, announced under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s leadership, will be executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through a public-private partnership framework. This futuristic transport solution comes as these regions face mounting traffic congestion due to rapid urbanization and population growth.  

Pod taxis are small, automated, driverless electric vehicles that run on elevated tracks. Designed to carry two to six passengers, they promise faster, safer, and environmentally friendly travel compared to conventional road transport. The system is expected to integrate seamlessly with existing metro and road networks, offering a modern solution to urban mobility challenges.  

Key highlights from the announcement include:  

• The government has directed MMRDA to conduct detailed feasibility studies and invite private firms to submit technical and financial proposals
