Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India's top automobile maker, has planned to set up a new greenfield facility focused on the manufacturing of SUVs, with operations planned for the financial year 2027-28 (FY28) and onwards. The move is strategic in nature and is intended to enhance the company's manufacturing capabilities in light of strong demand for its SUV range and to drive future growth in domestic and overseas markets.
Key Highlights:
The new plant will be a greenfield facility, or one constructed from scratch on an existing undeveloped land, so that M&M can integrate the most advanced in green and automated manufacturing technologies.
The expansion is one of Mahindra's larger plans to double its SUV, pick-up truck, and electric three-wheeler production capacity within the next three to four years, indicating the company's optimism for sustained market growth.
Mahindra’s recent investments have focused heavily on sustainable manufacturing, with its Chakan plant already operating as a water-positive facility powered entirely by renewable energy. The new plant is expected to follow similar eco-friendly principles, reinforcing the company’s commitment to green mobility and responsible manufacturing.
The development comes on the back of a massive investment in electric vehicle (EV) creation, including an allocation of ₹4,500 crore for establishing two new electric SUV brands and the addition of EV production capacity at existing units.
Industry Impact:
This step places Mahindra at the vanguard of Indian automotive revolution, as it keeps on investing in conventional SUVs and future electric vehicles. The new facility will not only suffice in meeting skyrocketing demand but also allow Mahindra to lead the way in green manufacturing, probably with cutting-edge automation and integrated renewable energy systems as with its existing Chakan operations.
