In a giant step towards indigenous defense, India's Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has issued formal expressions of interest (EOIs) to domestic companies for co-developing the country's first fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
This is a breakthrough in India's defense production model, since the project will now be undertaken by public-private partnerships, breaking HAL's long monopoly. The move is a part of a larger drive to speed up development, enhance innovation, and tap into India's new private aerospace sector.
AMCA in a Nutshell:
-
Type: Twin-engine, stealth, multirole fighter
-
Generation: 5.5 (with supercruise, sensor fusion, low radar cross-section)
-
Prototype Timeline: Initial induction expected between 2026–2027
-
Production Target: Early 2030s
-
Strategic Role: To neutralize upcoming threats like China's J-20 and Pakistan's J-35A
Who Can Bid?
-
Indian public or private enterprises can bid independently or in joint venture or consortium mode
-
Firms must be in compliance with Indian defense acquisition norms and also demonstrate aerospace production capabilities
Why It Matters:
-
The AMCA will be one of the cornerstones of the Indian Air Force's future fleet, replacing vintage Soviet-era aircraft
-
The initiative aligns with the "Make in India" and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, aiming to reduce foreign defense imports dependency
-
Industry giants like Tata Advanced Systems, L&T, Mahindra Aerospace, and Bharat Forge are expected to get on board
This comes after increasing regional tensions and a South Asian arms race with India seeking to match or surpass the air capabilities of surrounding nations.
