In a huge relief to higher education enrollment, the government of Tamil Nadu has made a 20% increase in admissions for students in government arts and science colleges for the academic year 2025–26. The move has been taken after the inflow of applications for admissions has increased and to prevent meritorious students from being deprived due to inadequate capacity.
Key Highlights:
-
20% more students will be admitted in government colleges this year, and 15% more and 10% more can be admitted in aided and private colleges, respectively.
-
The decision is made following a record 2.04 lakh applications for admission to government art and science colleges, much more than last year.
-
Growth will create over 60,000 new seats throughout the state across institutions.
Infrastructure and Institutional Development
-
Fifteen new government arts and science colleges have been opened this year, bringing the number of such colleges in Tamil Nadu to 179.
-
The state opened 35 new colleges in the last four years, although hiring of faculty has been halted in the face of court battles.
Equity and Inclusion Priority:
-
The rising demand is attributed by the state government to successful schemes like Pudhumai Pen, Tamizh Puthalvan, and Naan Muthalvan, which have provided a platform for rural and poor students.
-
Highdemand programs like BCom and English BA will be increased by universities, while science programs will have minimal growth with lab limitations.
