India's Test series opener against England at Headingley started on a strong note of unity, with the players from both sides sporting black armbands throughout the match and observing a minute's silence to pay respects to the victims of the tragic Air India aircraft crash in Ahmedabad. The crash took place on June 12, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was heading to London, crashed minutes after takeoff, and hit a hostel building of BJ Medical College. Over 270 people lost their lives, including a few Indian and British nationals, and there was one survivor.

Both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board made sure that the teams would be wearing black armbands during Day 1 of the Test as a mark of respect. The action was particularly emotive considering the close connection between the two nations and the fact that the two nations had lost citizens as a result of the accident.

Players and umpires remained silently at attention before national anthems, reflecting the cricketing world's deep sense of loss. India vice-captain Rishabh Pant described the emotional burden the team bears, adding their goal is to provide some consolation and pride to supporters in these desperate times.

This Test also witnessed a new era of Indian cricket, with Shubman Gill captaining the side for the first time. But on this day, there was only one agenda of unity and mourning, and cricket was put on the backburner for a moment of shared grief.
