Mumbai woke up to intense rainfall on Monday, triggering widespread waterlogging and traffic chaos across key areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy showers over the next 24 hours.

  • Lowlying zones like Andheri, Marine Drive, Vile Parle, and Kurla witnessed severe water accumulation, forcing the closure of the Andheri subway and rerouting of traffic via Gokhale and Thackeray bridges.
  • The IMD attributed the rainfall surge to a lowpressure system over the Bay of Bengal, intensifying monsoon activity along Maharashtra’s coast.
  • Rainfall distribution was uneven, with western suburbs receiving up to 50 mm, eastern suburbs 36 mm, and Colaba just 11 mm.
  • High tides of 3.88 metres at 9:19 am and 3.42 metres expected at 8:31 pm have added to flooding concerns.
