The nominations will be revealed in December.
India's mythological animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha has officially entered the prestigious 98th Academy Awards (Oscars 2026) race for Best Animated Feature, marking a significant milestone for Indian animation on the global stage. The film has secured eligibility alongside major international contenders such as Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, Disney’s Zootopia 2, DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys 2, Chainsaw Man: The Movie, and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.
With its unique blend of 2D and 3D animation, large-scale action sequences, and anime-inspired visuals, Mahavatar Narsimha brings Indian mythology to life with a modern cinematic style. Directed by debutant Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions in association with Hombale Films, the film has not only achieved commercial success—grossing approximately ₹325-400 crores globally—but has also gained international acclaim and a strong fan base. It is the first installment in a planned seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, with the sequel Mahavatar Parashuram slated for 2027.
The film met all the Academy’s eligibility criteria, including a minimum commercial run of seven consecutive days in the U.S. and featuring animation for over 75% of its runtime. While qualifying does not guarantee a nomination, it positions Mahavatar Narsimha as a strong contender that could bring India its first-ever Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Feature category.
