With the sacred month of Sawan underway, the Kanwar Yatra has officially begun, drawing lakhs of devotees across North India. To ease travel for kanwariyas, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has announced a significant boost in Namo Bharat train frequency on the Delhi–Meerut corridor.
Key Highlights
-
From July 11, trains between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South will run every 10 minutes during peak hours: 8 am–11 am and 5 pm–8 pm.
-
This is an upgrade from the previous 15minute interval, aimed at managing the surge in passenger traffic during the pilgrimage.
Infrastructure and Safety Measures
-
Traffic marshals have been deployed at key stations to manage crowd flow and ensure safety.
-
Enhanced lighting has been arranged at all stations and surrounding areas for better visibility.
-
Potholes and damaged road sections along the Namo Bharat route have been repaired; remaining work is being expedited.
-
Construction activities in crowded zones have been paused, and parking near station sites is restricted to prevent congestion.
Impact on Road Traffic
-
The Kanwar Yatra traditionally leads to heavy traffic across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
-
In Meerut, entry of heavy vehicles and buses is restricted during the yatra to safeguard pilgrims walking long distances to collect Ganga water from Haridwar.
The NCRTC’s proactive steps are expected to offer a faster, safer, and more comfortable travel alternative for devotees this Sawan.
