The much-anticipated inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, originally scheduled for May 24 in Bengaluru, has been postponed indefinitely. The decision comes in light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, with organizers prioritizing the safety and well-being of athletes, stakeholders, and the broader community.
The announcement was made on May 9, with the NC Classic team stating that while sports have the power to unite, the current circumstances demand solidarity with the nation. Chopra himself has been vocal about the situation, expressing gratitude toward the Armed Forces and emphasizing that standing firm with the country is the priority at this moment.
The tournament was set to feature some of the world's top javelin throwers, including Olympic and world champions Anderson Peters, Julius Yego, and Thomas Röhler. It was also expected to serve as a qualifier for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The postponement follows recent developments in the region, including heightened security concerns and military action along the India-Pakistan border. Chopra, who has faced backlash for his earlier invitation to Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, clarified that the athlete's participation was never a possibility given the current geopolitical climate.
A revised schedule for the Neeraj Chopra Classic will be announced once the situation stabilizes. Meanwhile, Chopra is set to begin his 2025 season at the Doha Diamond League on May 16.
