Key highlights

New Town, Kolkata, is poised to alleviate its chronic parking problem with the opening of the city's biggest multi-storey car parking lot, a signature project that will house more than 1,500 cars and serve the needs of the area's surging commercial growth.

Project Details

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opened the eight-storey parking facility on July 17, 2025. Spread over two adjacent plots (117 and 118) next to the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, the facility covers two acres and is an investment of around Rs 135–141 crore, a big boost to local infrastructure.

Every level of the ramp-up building is designed to accommodate approximately 200 cars with smooth car movement and optimum capacity utilization. Commercial area on the ground floor, suitable for showrooms, food stalls, and retail stores, is also provided in the building to increase visitor facilities and usefulness.

Strategic Importance

The complex squarely targets the region's severe lack of structured parking, as New Town transforms into a major commercial business hub. Its proximity to the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, malls, multiplexes, hotels, and the upcoming Silicon Valley and Fintech hubs guarantees ongoing, intensive parking demand.

Currently, major arteries such as Biswa Bangla Sarani experience more than 2,000 vehicles per hour, and projections by studies estimate daily passenger trips to reach the one million mark in the near future. The size of the new facility is intended to take up much of the slack from saturated fee-parking areas and roadside parking in the vicinity of major destinations.

Innovation and Community Impact The complex is supplemented by other such local infrastructure investments as housing for economically weaker and lower income sections, a two-storey cafeteria, and community areas. These composite developments are intended to position New Town as a role model of sustainable urban development.

The inauguration of the parking lot is likely to reduce congestion, make traffic smoother, and facilitate international conferences at nearby facilities, particularly Eco Park and the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre.

With its opening, New Town's latest parking lot is a benchmark for upcoming urban developments in Kolkata, blending utility, commercial activity, and urban planning vision.
