In a significant move to modernize Mumbai's suburban railway network, the Central Government has approved the procurement of 238 new air-conditioned local trains. This decision, announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to alleviate the city's notorious overcrowding and provide commuters with a more comfortable travel experience. The initiative is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3 and 3A, jointly funded by the central and state governments.
The new AC trains will feature advanced amenities such as automatic doors, energy-efficient designs, and enhanced passenger information systems. However, concerns over fare affordability remain, as current AC local fares are significantly higher than non-AC options. Commuter associations have welcomed the decision but emphasize the need for reasonable fare structures to ensure inclusivity for all Mumbaikars.
Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, praised the move as a long-overdue upgrade, drawing parallels with the introduction of mobile telephony in India. He believes that improved public transport will benefit both the middle class and the poor, despite initial affordability concerns.
