Struck out in the backcountry or stuck in a remote area with no cell bars? In 2025, Android phones are breaking free of traditional network limitations—thanks to a tide of new satellite and Wi-Fi messaging features sweeping across top brands and carriers. Here's how Android is making "no service" a thing of the past.

T-Mobile & Starlink Launch Satellite SMS Across Country:
Starting July 2025, T-Mobile's "T-Satellite" service, powered by SpaceX's Starlink, enables customers to text, call loved ones, and stream plain data via satellite while away from cellular range—all with their regular phones, without any additional hardware. The service is free for Go5G Next plan customers and is offered to other T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon customers for a fee each month. Satellite texting can be tested for free during a nationwide beta period until July.

Verizon & Skylo Launch Satellite Messaging on Android:
Verizon has made satellite texting available on Samsung Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 9 phones with other phones incoming. It will automatically enable satellite when you lose signal, and you can message anywhere with your phone's built-in messaging app.

Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 Occupy Top Spots:
Pixel 9 series supports Emergency SOS over satellite in Europe, Canada, and the U.S., whereas Galaxy S25 phones natively support Snapdragon Satellite for two-way messaging even in extremely remote locations. Both phones use Skylo or Iridium-powered networks to remain connected.

No Extra Hardware, Simply a Compatible Phone
All of the new Android phones (Pixel 9, S25, and soon likely S24/Z Fold 6) will be able to use these features with a rapid eSIM activation. Ditch the heaviness of satellite phones and attachments—text normally, even in the absence of an internet or cellular connection.

Global Expansion and Partnerships:
  • India's Vodafone Idea partnered with AST SpaceMobile to provide satellite connectivity to remote locations, a global push for mass coverage.
  • This satellite text feature extension is just one more way in which we are committed to keeping customers in touch wherever they are.
— Joe Russo, EVP, Verizon Bottom Line: Android's new satellite and Wi-Fi messaging capabilities keep you connected, receive assistance when you need it during an emergency, and never lose coverage—where the road may lead.
