President Droupadi Murmu, addressing the National Students' Convocation 2025 of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) here on June 23, paid a grand tribute to the profession, calling the cost accountants nation-builders and the key drivers in taking India to the developed nation status by 2047.
Recalling the historical and contemporary significance of accounting, President Murmu reaffirmed the close connection between accounting and accountability and noted that cost accountants have always been held in high esteem within Indian society for their exercise of financial prudence and transparency. She reviewed the history of the ICMAI since its establishment in 1944 and noted its critical role in India's economic development after independence and ongoing contribution to policymakers, governments, and industries in the development of cost-efficient methods and systems.
President Murmu called for cost accountants to embrace wider roles from traditional finance, and she called for them to lead in the areas of sustainability, policy-making, tax reforms, and corporate governance. She said sustainability is no longer a slogan but a necessity, and she called for the profession to allow businesses to factor in environmental cost and drive India's sustainable growth.
