In a powerful expression of cultural diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a traditional Pattachitra painting of Odisha to Croatian President Zoran Milanović on his historic visit to Croatia—the first ever by an Indian PM.

The gorgeous painting, created by artists of Odisha's heritage village Raghurajpur, depicts colorful moments from the life of Lord Krishna, like Ras Leela and Govardhan Hill's lift. The Pattachitra (derivative of patta meaning cloth and chitra meaning picture) is age-old and an integral part of art in Jagannath tradition, painted with natural colors and hand-made brushes.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also greeted the gesture, calling it a moment of pride for "Odia Asmita" and a tribute to India's cultural and artistic heritage. "PM Modi has once again brought global appreciation for Odisha's rich cultural heritage," he tweeted on X.

As a token of reciprocity, PM Modi also gifted Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković a silver candle stand from Rajasthan, reflecting India's exquisite handicrafts. The flower and geometric patterned candle stand showcases the royal elegance of Rajasthani metalware.

The ritual formed a part of wide-ranging bilateral talks on trade, technology, and culture. India and Croatia signed several MoUs, opening a new chapter in India–Croatia relations.

Cultural Highlights:
  • Art Form: Pattachitra (Odisha)
  • Themes illustrated: Life of Lord Krishna, Jagannath culture
