The Punjab government has just rolled out an exciting new initiative, setting aside a whopping Rs60 billion in its upcoming provincial budget to develop and restore 60 archaeological and heritage sites throughout the province. This bold plan is all about revitalizing Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, boosting local tourism, and safeguarding historical treasures for generations to come.
Key Highlights
• Significant Investment: The Rs60 billion will go towards restoring and developing 60 carefully chosen heritage sites—including museums, religious landmarks, and archaeological wonders—out of a total of 800 identified locations, many of which have sadly been neglected since the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
• Flagship Projects: The Lahore Museum is in line for a major Rs6 billion facelift, while the ancient city of Taxila is set to be recognized as an International Heritage City. These projects are key to the government’s mission to enhance Punjab’s profile in global tourism.
• Infrastructure Upgrades: This initiative also includes plans for building essential logistics, transportation, and visitor facilities to make these sites more accessible and improve the overall experience for tourists.
• Digital Innovation: A new digital tourism app will link users to 160 heritage sites virtually, including popular spots like Murree, offering interactive guides and information for travelers.
• Security and Support: A dedicated Tourist Force/Police is being established, with 600 personnel currently being recruited—200 of whom will be stationed in Murree—to ensure the safety of visitors and effective site management.
• Domestic Tourism Focus: The government is emphasizing projects that provide travel options for citizens who may not be able to afford international trips, aiming to boost local economies and nurture cultural pride.
Outlook
This comprehensive initiative positions Punjab as a frontrunner in cultural tourism and heritage preservation. By breathing new life into iconic sites, investing in infrastructure, and harnessing digital tools, the province is poised to attract both local and international visitors.
